San Francisco Activities: October

Hey San Francisco! This is the first article of many to come each month listing various upcoming activities within in the city that might be worthwhile to check out if you’re looking for something fun to do! And as always, be sure to tune into KXSF 102.5 FM everyday 10am-4pm & 10pm-4am for San Francisco’s premier community radio station.


October 1st-8th: Fleet Week


Event Type: Week-long Festival

Description:  “Taking place every October on the Marina Green over Italian Heritage Weekend, SFFW’s air show, parade of ships and many community events have become a significant and integral part of the city’s local culture and economy. Taking place over three consecutive days in the skies above the City’s waterfront, this air show event attracts over a million people around the Bay. Featuring the United States Navy Blue Angels.”


October 5th: Venom


Event Type: Movie

Description: “Journalist Eddie Brock is trying to take down Carlton Drake, the notorious and brilliant founder of the Life Foundation. While investigating one of Drake’s experiments, Eddie’s body merges with the alien Venom — leaving him with superhuman strength and power. Twisted, dark and fueled by rage, Venom tries to control the new and dangerous abilities that Eddie finds so intoxicating.” Also, note that the movie is set in San Francisco


October 7th: Castro Street Fair


Event Type: Street Fair

Description: “The Castro Street Fair has been held at Castro and Market streets on the first Sunday in October each year since the fair was founded by Harvey Milk in 1974. Expect lots of entertainment, including music, dance, comedy and variety shows, as well as tons of local art and food. A favorite exhibitor of previous years, Barnaby’s World of Wonderment, features sword swallowers, burlesque dancers and other wild performers. The Castro Street Fair puts extra special emphasis on costumes, encouraging attendees to dress in their wildest outfits, which also makes for some great people-watching.”


October 9th: TEDx San Francisco


Event Type: One-Day event

Description: “TEDxSanFrancisco is a full day of live TED talks and performances in the heart of San Francisco with inspirational speakers in the field of tech, science, philosophy, design, and entertainment. Since 2016, it is a yearly event with the recurrent theme DareToKnow.”

October 11-15 – Litquake


Event Type: Week-long Festival

Description: “Litquake units readers and literature lovers alike. Litquake inspires writers and readers to celebrate the written word with diverse literary programming, interactive workshops, and a nine-day festival.”


October 12th: Goosebumps 2: Haunted Halloween


Event Type: Movie

Description: “Two boys face an onslaught from witches, monsters, ghouls and a talking dummy after they discover a mysterious book by author R.L. Stine.”


October 14th: Bluxome Street Fair


Event Type: One-day Street Fair

Description: “It’s a block party! Bluxome Street Fair is a celebration of Bluxome Street Business and the SOMA Community. Enjoy food, family friendly activities, a dog run, live music, and local vendors. Come one, come all!”

October 14th: Asian Street Market – Benefitting Jean Parker Elementary School


Event Type: One day Street Fair

Description: “Jet-set to Asia for this year’s Asian Street Market at SoMa StrEat Food Park! Experience flavors from Japan, Korea, China, the Philippines, and beyond all at one event! Spend the day slurping noodles, sipping boba, dipping dumplings, and more!”

October 18th: Direct Impact Marketplace 2018 | Fair Trade, Local, B Corp + more!


Event Type: One-day event

Description: “Sports Basement and Patagonia are back for the 3rd annual Direct Impact Marketplace – a showcase highlighting conscious shopping and advocating for better consumption, education and creativity for all. October 18th-20th: International Festival of Short Films @ Roxie Theater in the Mission


Event Type: Weekend-Film Festival

Description: “The 2018 San Francisco International Festival of Short Films is October 18 – 20, 2018. This annual event features pieces from around the world. In 2018 each themed time slot includes around five to six shorts. Important themes include pieces about self identity, boundaries, and life stages. Other time slots included shorts about transformation, the relationships we have with the world, and spaces between the past, present, and future. The pieces are thought provoking, inspirational, and a great look at critical moments in others’ lives.”


October 20th: Wharf Fest Chowder Competition 2018


Event Type: One-day Festival

Description: Wharf Fest returns to San Francisco’s iconic waterfront neighborhood. For the fourth year in a row, Fisherman’s Wharf invites Bay Area locals to come enjoy the neighborhood after the crowds of visitors have subsided but before the fabulous fall weather fades away. Festival goers will enjoy a street fair, art vendors and a variety of free activities. At the most delicious part of the day, the Chowder Competition, 10 different Wharf restaurants will battle it out for the title of the Best Chowder at Fisherman’s Wharf.

October 20th: Potrero Hill Festival


Event Type: One day festival

Description: “Enjoy the views from above at the Potrero Hill Festival. This family-friendly event draws more than 6,000 people every fall. During this event, you can listen to live music, mingle with the locals, and entertain the kiddies. All events take place on 20th Street between Missouri and Wisconsin Streets on Saturday, October 20, 2018.”


October 31st-November 4th: Big Book Sale 2018


Event Type: Book Sale

Description: “At the end of October, Friends will fill up the Festival Pavilion Pier at Fort Mason for the 54th Big Book Sale, an iconic San Francisco tradition. Members will kick off the sale on October 30th at the Member Preview Sale and Reception, from 4-8PM. The sale will continue from the 31st, Halloween, through November 4th. On the last day, the 4th, all books will be just $1. Don’t fret about book selection! All sections will be restocked daily with new and exciting finds; there will be no shortage of great titles. The multi-day event attracts people from all over the Bay Area and beyond. Mike Pincus, a book enthusiast who comes to the sale every year, donates his home library collection before the sale, and then replenishes his shelves with new books he buys. It’s because of our supporters like Mike that we are able to support the superior San Francisco Public Library and make an exceptional difference! We can’t wait to see you at the Big Book Sale this fall!”
